God's Revelation
Part 2

Jesus of Nazareth

A Portrait of Jesus

The portrait of Jesus is richly painted in the section of the New Testament called the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Each is a written record of how Jesus lived, what he did, how he treated people, how he viewed power, fame and wealth, and what he thought and valued.

Many Misconceptions

about Jesus depict a detached, mystical guru-type figure.

THE GOSPELS PORTRAY

SOMEONE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

HE WAS

COMPASSIONATE AND MERCIFUL,

THE INSECURITIES AND FEARS THAT PLAGUE MOST

DID NOT BIND HIM.

HIS HEART WAS FOR THE DOWNTRODDEN AND POOR —

THE SICK, THE PROSTITUTES, THE THIEVES, AND THE CHILDREN,

HE CONFRONTED POWERFUL RULERS WHO

UNJUSTLY PERSECUTED HIM.

JESUS SEEMED TO HAVE AN

INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF EACH PERSON HE ENCOUNTERED.

YET HE WAS AUTHORITATIVE

AND INTOLERANT OF HYPOCRISY AND OPPRESSION.

HIS ELEVATED TEACHING WAS MATCHED BY HIS

COURAGEOUS ACTIONS.

EVEN DARING TO TOUCH THOSE WHO WERE CONSIDERED LOATHSOME AND IMPURE.

HIS NON-VIOLENT RESPONSE INSPIRED FUTURE REFORMERS SUCH AS MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. AND GANDHI.

He somehow touched their deepest longings and desires.

THE IMPACT OF JESUS

Speaking on a strictly historical level, the impact that Jesus’ life had on the history of mankind is unfathomable.
French military commander and emperor from 1804–1814
I know men and I tell you that
Jesus Christ is no mere man.
Between Him and every other person in the world
there is no possible term of comparison.
Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force.
Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love;
and at this hour millions of men would die for Him.
German poet and author of Faust
If ever the Divine appeared on earth,
it was in the Person of Christ...
The human mind no matter how far it may advance in every other department,
will never transcend the height and moral culture of Christianity
as it shines and glows in the Gospels.
British novelist, journalist, and author of The War of the Worlds
christ is the most unique person in history.
No man can write a history of the human race without giving first and foremost place
to the penniless teacher of Nazareth.
